The Yin and Yang Approach to Self-Care

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

These days more than ever people are beginning to realize the importance of self-care. People are slowing down and taking more time for themselves, however self-care doesn't always look like lighting your favourite candle and taking a bubble bath (although this can definitely be included!). I like to talk with my patients about a holistic form of self-care that includes two different categories of care: the yin and the yang.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, the yin and yang theory is all about achieving a dynamic balance, and what is self-care if not trying to introduce more balance into our lives? Yin properties are more calm, dark, feminine and cool, while yang properties are more energizing, bright, masculine, and hot.

Yin Self care

Yin forms of self-care include more nurturing kinds of care, what you would typically think of when talking about self-care. This could be curling up in front of the fire with a good book, getting a massage, or going to your favourite yin yoga class. These kinds of care are restorative and rejuvenating and allow our bodies to slow down and rest.

Yang self-care

Yang forms of self-care on the other hand are activities that energize you and spark passion in your life. Some examples of yang activities may be going on a run in nature, meal prepping nutritious food for the week, seeking counselling, learning something new, or challenging yourself in an area that you are passionate about. These activities are aimed to introduce inspiration and revitalization into our lives.

Both forms of self-care are equally as important. When you think about your self-care routine do you find yourself gravitating towards more yin or yang activities?
